baby peacock (asain peafowl) by thomas motyka on Flickr.

The curious look and little topknot just make it that much cuter.
Peafowl are omnivorous and eat most plant parts, flower petals, seed heads, insects and other arthropods, reptiles, and amphibians. They also travel in hunting “packs” between ten and ninety.

Snowy Plover (Charadrius nivosus) chick by Kristian Bell on Flickr.

Via Flickr:
This snowy plover chick was so young it struggled to open its eyes, but even as a half-blind, 2-day old chick it knew I was trouble and could outrun a fox.

These birds have the most ridiculous chicks.

African Fish-eagle

(photos by africafreak and the accipter)

Haliaeetus vocifer:

  • National bird of Zambia and Zimbabwe; found on the shields of Namibia, Zambia and South Sudan
  • Common around most Sub-Saharan bodies of fresh water
  • Closely related to the Madagascar Fish-eagle
  • Nestlings usually engage in siblicide :(
  • Believed to be monogamous; that is, they mate for life
  • Has special structures on its toes (spiricules) to grasp fish
  • Usually eats fish but is an opportunistic feeder, sometimes taking waterfowl, terrapins, frogs, lizards, and even chickens
  • Distinct, wild cry that for many embodies the “spirit of the African wilderness”

Fly Away Home (1996)

Amy is only 13 years old when her mother is killed in an auto wreck in New Zealand. She goes to Canada to live with her father, an eccentric inventor whom she barely knows. Amy is miserable in her new life…that is until she discovers a nest of goose eggs that were abandoned when developers began tearing up a local forest. The eggs hatch and Amy becomes “Mama Goose”. The young birds must fly south for the winter, but who will lead them there? With a pair of ultralight airplanes, Amy, her dad and their friends must find a way…

This is quite a good movie.
