vondell-swain: This tortoise, who died in 2006, was born 26 years before America was formed, in 1750.It was born when Thomas Jefferson was seven and died twelve days after James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” hit number-one on the US charts. Apparently the turtle’s name was Adwaita (meaning “the one and only” in Sanskrit), and he was from the Seychelles, having been captured by a British general and kept as a pet in India during the colonial period.
